I'm looking at a rental on Fifth Street. What's that neighborhood like?

Depends upon what city, and what the cross street is.

Yes, I guess mentioning the city would be helpful!

You don't want to live there, it's definitely too "iffy." If you want to live near downtown, I recommend looking south of downtown, maybe Laurel Park. The area you mention is more in Gillespie Park, and while not all of it is bad, there is definitely still a crime problem there, I wouldn't live there myself.

Hope this helps!

I lived on 6th & Goodrich for two years and had lots of panhandling(lots of people needing money for a bus ticket), a break in (came home and caught them in the act), shady characters about at all hours, etc. I was glad to finally move from Gillespie Park. They say it's "up and coming" but it's still got a way to go. I agree with the post above that Laurel Park and points south are a better option. If you do move to Gillespie, get a big dog.

I moved to that area in 1994. I lived on 6th St. There are some interesting looking houses there. But to be honest I couldnt wait to get the heck out of there!!!
Noisey, prostitutes, drug dealers, break ins.
They did make the park there very nice, also cleaned the crime up alot. But it is still a not so good area.
