I voted for it as well. It's absolutely LUDICROUS that people would be opposed to reaping the benefits of a penny sales tax when 40 percent of the proceeds come from people who don't live here, primarily tourists. I know a lot of anti-tax folks (read Tea Party nuts) are opposed to ANY tax, but this community would have so much less "stuff" without it.

Bring on the new arena and Canal District Redevelopment! Woo-hoo!

I'm glad it passed as well. It will be interesting to see how the new arena develops and what becomes of the canal district proposal and future streetcar extension.

Try telling that to Bubba. He won't listen. He'll just continue on his anti-tax, anti-government, communist this, socialist that rant.

Breaks my heart how ignorant some of the populace is in such a beautiful city. And people wonder how we got such nut jobs into local public offices.

Anyway, my apologies for being off subject. Again, GREAT WIN FOR CHATHAM!

Well you know, there was a HUGE organized effort by some very prominent people to defeat SPLOST this time around, under the banner of "Take Back Our Community." WTF?! Take it back from WHAT?!

There were even quite a few prominent people who should have known better willing to say, "We don't need no stinking new arena! The old one is fine!" Uh ... NO! It's NOT fine. It's an ugly, hulking, antiquated dinosaur. When the new arena replaces it, the plan is to tear down the old one and RESTORE the square that was destroyed to build it in the early 1970s. Who could oppose that?

And of course, there were the usually naysayers who said, "Savannah doesn't need this. Nobody will ever come here. Nobody will ever go there. The city is dying ... blah blah blah ... black vs. white ... crime sucks ... you won't catch me dead downtown after dark ..." Thank god, those people are dying off and are fewer and farther between.

The SPLOST was renewed 56 percent to 44 percent. Considering the amount of opposition to it, that's a pretty strong mandate, IMO. It bodes well for the future of Savannah and Chatham County.

Wish I could rep you but I need to spread the wealth around first.

I told my husband the SPLOST theme should have been the "Tick Off the T-Party" vote. Can't stand those cheapskates.

I'm interested in how much economic development on the westside occurs after they build the new arena.

It can't be like Turner Field in Atlanta, where there's literally nothing to do once you leave a Braves game and you're right next to the hood.

I hope this spurs new development and tearing down of stuff on that side of Bay Street. With the new hotels being built on that side I suppose it could spread further out.

I think you know what they mean by that... The same goes for our federal government, too. The fervor dies back once a certain African American leaves office.
