Thank you! I'm going to check out their websites right now!

Default Teacher for hire

I have been following this thread and can vouch for much of the comments made. I live in Rome, GA. I have tried for two years to land with the local school system, had three interviews, but haven't landed one yet. With 16 years experience, an Ed Sp degree, gifted certified, and led several committies....I'm still waiting. I'm certified in 4-8, all gifted, and leadership certified. If anyone has a lead, please let me know. Btw, I've even been willing to take a pay cut with private schools, but had no luck.

So what do you think the deal is?? One would think that a school district this size would have TONS of turnover each year… there are several special ed jobs currently listed on their website. At least you've had a few interviews. We can't even seem to have our applications acknowledged for us to even know they've been received.

The more savvy teachers already on staff will often make sure they get the higher-achieving students, since those tend to be better-behaved and more receptive to the material. A new person trying to get their foot in the door will often be assigned the more challenging, less-disciplined classes. If your specialty is gifted-talented, you may find the established teachers not really wanting to "give up" their best students to a new person, even if the new person may be better qualified to teach them.

One of the positions I interviewed for (and quickly stopped pursuing) was in a school re-organizing to add another instructor due to over-crowding. The vice-principal very candidly (maybe just "stupidly") told me that they did not know yet which classes the new hire would have because the teachers were going to meet and decide which students would be staying in their rooms and which ones would be transferred to the "new classroom". I may have been young, but I wasn't stupid; I pointed out the mistake that was, and thanked her for her time before leaving.

Vsimp, I heard a fellow teacher tell me that I had degreed myself out of a job. When you can hire two vacancies for my salary.....you are in trouble. Praying that's not the case. My family loves Savannah!

See…. I sure hope that isn't the case but I'm starting to wonder if it actually is. Why else would experienced teachers with degrees in several areas not be hired? We love Savannah too and would love to be able to relocate there. My husband actually does have a phone interview (we live out of state) with a principal from one of the high schools there for a history position tomorrow. Crossing my fingers……

I would like to think that most school districts would take experience and degrees over less experience and fewer credentials, since most of the base salary is paid via the state step program. The only money that the local district is out of is the local supplement, which varies greatly by district.

That's definitely good to know! Thank you!
