For years there has been a gap between the Savannah Riverwalk’s eastern end at Morrell Park and the extension further east that was built five years ago to serve the failed Savannah River Landing development.

Now the city is preparing to build the missing link to the 54-acre site, which has sat vacant since the economic collapse in 2008 brought development plans to a halt.

On Monday, the city’s purchasing department issued a request for design proposals for a 600-foot connection that will extend out in front of the Savannah Marriott Riverfront’s private waterfront veranda, which sits wedged between the two sides.

The city has continued to be in active discussions regarding the Savannah River Landing development, but the plan has always been to build the link on the eastern end in conjunction with the extension of the riverwalk’s western side, said city spokesman Bret Bell.

NOW.. if only we had some development going on at the Savannah River Landing site.

This is a dream, but I wish they would incorporate a transit hub for rail there along with whatever development occurs so that there would be another mode of transport between downtown and Tybee.

Considering all of the money the city has sunk into that area and continues to do so with infrastructure improvements; I believe its only a matter of time before something is announced. I'm hoping is sooner rather than later though.

sounds good. The riverwalk extension will be nice. So will the powerplant hotel. I am happy with the project.

Imagine if they start adding more ferry stops above and below the current riverfront area. And maybe even a smaller water taxi that goes up the canal to the Arena / Canal District area which is supposed to have a park along the canal. And maybe even a twice daily high-speed ferry to Tybee. It'll be like Venice! You could actually usefully get around by boat. I don't know if that'd be cost effective or realistic. And yes then tie that area into rail and bus, a la the current 'intermodal' center. Just a pipe dream right?

Good things are coming. I think some of this ancillary stuff coming with the Arena on the west side will make it all worth it, like the canal park. And revitalize the area by pushing away the blight. It can all be done while still keeping the brilliant historic fabric we cherish. Which is why the original Sav. River Landing plan (as News' thread) was brilliant and beautiful. I thought it was perfect. I hope we can make it happen even partially.. After all, we already paid as taxpayers to put in all the utilities..
