Fascinating story from Forbes about the Strickland family that owns both River Street Sweets and Savannah Candy Kitchen -- now with 17 stores nationwide! Few people know that the company was once just a single store on River Street that was split by divorce. Fierce rivals for years, the Strickland kids reunited their parents operations into a combined $35 million annual business!

Forbes Welcome

So funny that you posted this; I send out their pecan assortment to my Yankee friends every year, and they go gaga over them. I don't think anything that I send out at Christmas gets the reaction that they do.

I bet they really appreciate it! I love pralines.

Great gesture by these "children of divorce," who wanted to stop the rancor and bitterness of their parents' breakup for all time so it couldn't poison them any further.

@NB: Thanks for your old tip about the Whistlestop Café in Juliette. I remembered it, then forced my relatives off I-75 to stop after a recent family reunion. (They were driving.) We loved it. Sweet tea, collard greens, cornbread, fried green tomatoes, etc. Heaven (at least to me it is).

I spend a lot of time on River Street and always get a laugh at the tourists being offered a pralines sample.

"Pralines? What's that?" they'll say.

But seeing the expression on their faces when they take that first bite and are HOOKED -- priceless!

I feel sorry for people who aren't from the South -- I really do!

I'm a purist...give me the original ginger. They've got all manner of flavors now. I love them so much that I had to make a pilgrimage to Old Salem one year. Just standing in the gift shop gave me insight into what Heaven must be like.
