I took a walk down West River Street one night this week and took some new pictures of construction progress. You really can’t comprehend the amazing transformation that’s taking place on that end of the street without seeing it yourself in person, and admittedly nighttime doesn’t do it justice. But I hope these photos give you all an idea. Enjoy!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THESE PHOTOS: Details of the new Alida Hotel including the lobby, restaurant, pool deck and GRAND STAIRCASE leading down from Montgomery to River Street (from top and bottom): Also, photos of the nighttime construction crews pouring concrete for the Plant Riverside parking deck (below water level). And then just some general photos of the construction zone; including two shots inside the old powerhouse and then some exteriors of the two new buildings showing the sheer mass of them, and how they’re creating a dense and narrow “tunnel” effect on that block of River Street. As you look at these images, fast forward in your mind about 18 months and try to envinsion that whole area teeming with hundreds of people nearly 24/7.

It's truly amazing to see all the changes that are occurring in Savannah. I can't wait to see the other hotels planned for the east end of River St start construction.

I’ve been curious why no progress has been made on starting those hoteks. They were all approved a long time ago. Especially the new Hilton.

From what I understand, they are still going through the design approval process with the historic review board.

Yes. The AC Hotel is still in Part 1 review, as is the Hotel Anne. The Hilton is in Part 2, which is materials and colors. They should have that approved pretty soon. Anything of this scale is going to take two years to get through the HDBR.

It’s a miracle that anything new ever gets built in the Savannah HD

Ain't that the truth! If it's not MPC it's the building dept. Between them you need to have a strong passion to get it done.

Most HDs are notorious for this.
