Hi all!

I've got an interview in Savannah, GA and I'd like to be as prepared as possible in case I am offered the position, so I'm looking around at potential places that I could live should I need to relocate. The job would be in the city proper - are there areas there that are safe? Or should I look at surrounding areas, like the islands? I'm a twenty-eight year old woman who will be living on my own, so safety is my top priority.

Thank you so much!
Kat

What is your budget, likes, interests? When I was 28, downtown would be the place to be. It is as safe as an urban area but you need to pay attention to your surroundings. There are some rough areas on the east and west sides of downtown but the core area is getting better. It is still hit or miss south of Forsyth Park to Victory Drive but it is improving. There are a lot of rentals and a great night life if that is what you like. It can be a bit pricey so that will be a big issue. If you like being closer to a and I use the term loosely "beach" (I hate Tybee) the islands are your best bet. Depending on where the job is located (Savannah is spread out well past I-95) you may like Pooler more. The violent crime is lower on the islands and Pooler. The area can pretty much cover your likings but it is a slower pace if you are coming from a large metro area. The seasons consist of Summer, 3 weeks of fall and 2 weeks of spring, plus about 5 days where the temperatures dip below 32 at night so I guess that counts as winter!! The summer can be oppressive if you are not used to it initially. If you can plan an extra day or two to check out the area while you are here. There are some other threads that have a lot on development projects, we are getting some infill properties and the Starland district is going to be nice if they get through the lawsuits. If you have anything specific you want to know just ask.

If safety is your top priority, get a condo or apartment in a gated community in Pooler. You’ll be safe, but you’ll miss the charm and flavor of Savannah all together.

Dat's a whole lot of missin. GA, I hate to say this because you live there, but with all due respect, I'd rather spend my life as a Buddhist monk with a vow for silence than to live it "in a condo in a gated community in Pooler".

I dont disagree. I thought that was what I said? OP said security was her first concern, over charm, beauty, activities, etc.
