I suspect that the creator of "The Terminator" film series had this same concern a couple of decades before the scientist did.
I'm sure that some other sci-fi writers had the same notion a few decades before that. It just seems more impressive now that we actually have autonomous machines that can inflict deadly harm.

I wasn't just referring to weapons. Stand in the wrong place within the reach of a welding robot at a manufacturing facility and I imagine the result could be deadly.
If you're stupid enough to ignore yellow warning lines and protector bars I guess you get what you ask for.
I worked for a company that used them in the plant and they were very well marked with yellow do-not-cross lines and the areas where you could get too close to the arm itself had metal "fences" to keep you away from them. It was my understanding that this was required by OSHA and if not in place OSHA would shut down the entire assembly line until they were. Fines to follow.
