The Amazon devices are designed to be used in their ecosystem with Amazon Prime, which requires an annual subscription fee, same as Netflix or any other service. You pay money and you can watch (stream) movies and TV shows to your device. AFAIK you can't just connect a tablet to the internet and watch TV or movies for no cost. There might be something out there but I haven't looked in to it.

I don't mind paying (a modest fee, that is), but how would I know if it would work at my local coffeeshop without/before buying/subscribing?

You'd have to ask the shop what speed their free wifi offers. Unless they purposely limit the bandwidth or block streaming services to prevent people from streaming movies it should work.

Looking at Amazons requirements for Prime http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=201422810

Standard Definition (SD) videos: 900 Kbits/sec
High Definition (HD) videos: 3.5 Mbits/sec

So a minimum of 1 Mbps for non HD viewing, 3.5 Mpbs for HD viewing, which isn't fast as far as speed ratings go.

So could you also use a "chromebook" for this purpose? Because those ARE on sale Friday. Do you plug it into something at the coffeeshop or...??? Again, I have never used a computer in my life except the one they stuck on my desk at work (and that one, only reluctantly, and with the constant support of IT staff).

I don't see why not. You would just use the web browser to access the streaming services rather than a dedicated app on a tablet like the Fire8 you mentioned. I haven't tried it so I can't say for certain.

I don't even know what a "chromebook" is. But, hey, if the price is right!

You might want to do some research and read reviews before you buy, many people thought the same thing about the Yugo.

Directv is running some very good deals right now. I think one of them is something like 20 bucks a month for 175 channels for a year. The second year you will pay more of course but you could also scale back to a lower package.

Outside of that you best bet is the local channels over the air with an HD antenna

If you have a decent internet connection then you could look into a Roku and using streaming services like Hulu and Netflix.
