Two preprints popped up on the arXiv site, one titled "The First Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor". Korean authors are talking about a lead-based material, LK-99, doped with copper. They're saying its structure creates "quantum wells" and that's what's causing the superconducting behavior. They're even claiming it can superconduct up to room temperature and beyond.

They've got some data to back it up - stuff like x-ray diffraction and EPR. They're also showing off behaviors a superconductor should have. Think Meissner effect and sudden resistivity changes at a critical temperature.

Making LK-99 doesn't seem too complicated. Labs all over are probably trying to reproduce its synthesis and properties right now. If it checks out, it's a game-changer. It could kickstart more research into quantum-well superconducting materials. The potential applications are huge - everything from electrical generation and transmission to antennas, power storage, magnet applications, and electric motors.

The betting markets have the chances it's the real deal at 26%.

Translated update from Korean news, looks messy:

"On the other hand, the authors of the thesis drew a line that this thesis was not a completed thesis and that it was not intended to be published.

Representative Lee said in a phone call with Yonhap News that day, "Research Professor Kwon arbitrarily published it in the archive without the permission of other authors," and insisted that he "requested to download it to the archive."

Dr. Kim Hyun-tak also claimed in an interview with New Scientist, an American science magazine, that "the two papers have many flaws and were published without his permission."

Representative Lee also revealed that research professor Kwon served as the chief technology officer (CTO) of the Quantum Energy Research Institute, but he resigned from the directorship four months ago and is currently not related to the company.

According to a Korea University official, research professor Kwon is known to be out of contact with the school."

Didn't know they make bets about science

Yes, it's on Polymarket. I think it's legal only for people outside the U.S.

According to https://twitter.com/Andercot/status/1686215574177841152 Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and arXiv simulations back LK-99 as a room-temperature superconductor. Simulations show specific conduction pathways enabling this, particularly near the 'Fermi Surface'. But, copper atoms need to settle in 'higher energy' sites in the crystal lattice for this to occur, making the material challenging to synthesize.

The market is up 37%.
