ROTTERDAM officials are creating a buzz after installing the latest in teenage repellents. Dubbed the mosquito, it's set to put the bite on loiterers.
The mosquito, or "teen repellent," is intended to discourage groups of kids from loitering in the streets, making a nuisance of themselves or engaging in anti-social behavior.
I've known about the mosquito tone for a few years now. Heck, I used it as a tone on my cellphone back in high school - I could hear when I got a message, but the teacher was clueless.
But man... at long intervals, that tone is the most ANNOYING thing in the world. I would definitely not go into any store that used it. ((And I'm 22))
This thing has been in use for a couple of years or so to discourage teens from hanging out at malls or business areas. It's said it doesn’t effect older people because age-related hearing loss. Seems to me it raises a number of questions.
- Is it an effective tool for businesses?
- Does it drive away potential shoppers?
- Is it kept on all the time, or only when a potential problem is perceived?
- What age range does it target?
- What does it do for tots and babies?
Can you hear it? It might also depend on how well your speakers work.
Interesting. I heard just one, the first, and I'm in that age range. I do, however, have tinnitus in both ears do I may have heard another one, but it might be in the range where I always hear a noise.
I think I'll set up a speaker on my fence with a sensor set to turn on with vibration. That way every time the jerk off neighbor kids think it's okay to use our fence as a backstop I'll bug the heck out them with this noise. Being polite and asking them (and their idiot parents) to please stop certainly does no good.
