LOL...The Military/Navy knows how to punish indiscretions with restrictions and extra duty. I bet you never were late again; nor partied as heavily after 45 days of "torture" .

These(X-class) carriers, three of which are currently planned, will be called the Ford Class Carriers. Construction on the first ship in the series was begun in 2007 and is scheduled for completion in 2015.

This class features 14 new design features; foremost of which is electromagnetic aircraft launching systems, which will replace the current steam catapult launching system. Also advanced arresting gear to assist in aircraft landings, a redesigned nuclear reactor, stealthier features and improved self defense as well as other advancements. It's designation will be CVN 78.

LOL ... trust me i learned my lesson as it was like going to jail for 45 days just because i was late to work as the military doesn't mess around

I bet the Norfolk area especially in Newport News where these going to be built by Northrop Grumman is really stoked by the economics that the shipyards have on the local economy there as these carrier construction jobs will last for years.

Heck maybe i should get my welding certification and head on up there

I assume they'd just keep their distance and use Superbugs (or I guess A-6s at the time of the movie) to start putting paveways right thru the flight decks of their carriers, then pick off the escort ships with air-launched harpoons.

Now that would be a cool movie.
I must admit it would be an interesting scenario but akin to a amusement park shooting gallery as far as technology is concerned....the enterprise could probably defeat the entire Japanese Navy of that time period, assuming they had sufficient ordnance. .

I served aboard USS Saratoga, CVA-60, trust me, a modern carrier could take on all of WWII Japan. For anyone that did carrier duty, I was in "W" Division, you know the guys with magazines guarded 24/7 by armed Marines.

I know i've told this before but again when my friend who was a Machinist Mate gave me a tour of the #1 Engine Room and told me that if the steam lines that feed the turbines had developed a pin hole leak that the PSI was so powerful that it would instantly cut in half anything including a person if he walked across it's path as that technology was definitely outdated back in the 80's and they did phase it out by the end of the 80's.

Oh yeah the temps in the Engine and Boiler rooms were incredibly hot as i remember the temp gage was showing F140 degrees as they had to constantly pipe in refrigerated cold air down there and still they were required to rotate out of there every so often during their 4 hour shifts as i assume these Gas Turbine ships Engine Rooms are extremely cooler in temperatures.
I think electromagnetic rail gun technology has been around at least 20 years....and theoritically much longer.......I'll post a few links, as I am not sure myself of the timeline for that technology>>>

Zumwalt class destroyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apparently the technology has been around since 1918; this is how Magnetic Levitation trains are accelerated and decelerated. Also the technology is to be used as a weapon on our next class of destroyers The DDX class(Zumwalt class) destroyers...I believe it can fire a projectile up to Mach 7 and for far greater distances than current methods about 300 miles.

PS.....I too remember reading that the steam pressure...if leaked through a small opening could easily cut a person in half...scary....in fact they use high pressure water jets to cut Titanium these days>>>

I completely agree.....my only concern is running out of ordnance/ammunition....Large ships could easily be taken out with Harpoon Missiles and piston powered aircraft are no match for modern jet fighters.

Yeah the Japanese aircraft would be a non-factor since the US carrier would know exactly where their task force was and could easily keep distance necessary to where the Japanese couldn't find 'em. Any scout planes the Japanese launched would be easily shot down with an amraam from 30 miles away.

Even the extra-thick armor on their battleships would be nullified as harpoons can be programmed to pop-and-drop so they'd be going right into their superstructure and decks.

Maybe it's a sadistic streak but I still think it would be cool movie.

LOL...I agree and would love to see the scenario play itself out.
I know the Harpoons pop up and strike amidship, on deck, as I am the "honorary" Naval Weapons Officer here at CD.

I saw a great battle scenario, on the Military Channel where our F35 Strike Fighters along with drones took on a vastly, numerically superior enemy who possessed planes just one generation behind us; but with a 10 to 1 advantage...extremely interesting computer generated battle graphics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-35_Lightning_II
