One possibility might be a third ferry terminal, between Maury Island and Des Moines. That would help take pressure off of the Fauntleroy Terminal, which can't easily be expanded. A Southworth to Downtown Seattle fast ferry would also help.

There will never be a bridge. At least not in the next couple decades with foreseeable technology and prices.

I'd imagine massive opposition to the idea even if it was free. Money would flow in because land owners would kill for it, but rural residents don't necessarily want to turn into sprawl, it would be an environmental disaster on several fronts, and many people would object to the massive subsidy as well as the massive tolls. This would be many, many times the cost of 520 for example.

If one or two of those issues was solved (new technology as a starting point) maybe it would be conceivable, in 30 years.

Kitsap Transit plans to launch fast ferry service from Southworth to Coleman Dock in 2020.

And just over two years may seem like ages now, but will likely pass more quickly than any of us expect!

Vashon has very low population density, and this will not likely change due to water rights/supply limitations. And the people don't seem to want increase population or development- which makes me think that a bridge won't be considered anytime soon.

Maybe if land prices around the sound continue to soar over the next few decades there eventually would be enough of an economic motivation to further develop Vashon (and its infrastructure.) But that would be a result of external pressures and likely would be opposed by local residents.
