I cannot for the life of me find a reliable way to plan trips.

I have used:
- Sound Transit website
- Pierce Transit website
- Amtrak website
- iOS app "Transit"
- iOS Google Maps
- Google Maps for desktop

... and every single one gives me different options. For instance, one tells me to take Amtrak from Tacoma Dome Station toward King Street Station and disembark at Kent Station, while another tells me to take Sounder / South to Kent Station, etc.

Here is my route:
Portland Ave. / 34th St. in Tacoma (Home) or Tacoma Dome Station
to
The Landing in Renton (Work)
Arrive by 7:50 AM

I really want to start taking transit, but this is all so confusing, and I don't want to end up lost on my way to work or home. What the heck do I do?

The walk from S 7th and Rainier to the Landing is over a mile. 6:20 Sounder from Tacoma Dome, 10 minute wait at Tukwila Station.

This is going to be the best way of going about things.

For future reference, reverse engineering the problem can be helpful, as is this site: Routes by Neighborhood - Schedules & Maps - King County Metro Transit

Here's what I've found:
Tacoma Dome Station, board Sounder for King Street Station by 6:55 AM -> Disembark @ Kent Station, Arrive by 7:35 AM (or 6:35 to 7:17) ($3.75) -> Board 566 SR-520/NE 40th - Overlake -> Disembark @ Park Ave N @ Logan Ave N, Arrive by 7:45 AM ($2.50)
1 h 19 min

$6.25.

Transit App gives me:
Tacoma Dome Station, board Sounder for King Street Station by 6:40 AM -> Kent Station by 7:22 AM ($3.75) -> 566 SR-520/NE 40th - Overlake, disembark @ Park / Garden in Renton by 7:43 AM ($2.50).

$6.25.

Taking the route mentioned above would be:
SounderTrain Tacoma Dome Station Leave by 6:35 AM -> Tukwila Station, Arrive by 7:22 AM ($4.00) -> F Line 676 -> Park Ave N @ Logan Ave N, Arrive by 7:57 AM ($2.50)

I cannot justify $13 per day.

How is this so expensive?

edit: Punching in on the website 'Tacoma Dome Station' to 'Sanctuary Renton' (the apartments there) gives me:
6:35 AM Sounder -> Tukwila Station -> 676 F Line -> Park Ave N. / Logan Ave N. by 7:55 AM

$4.00.

$160 per month. It currently costs me about $95/mo (@ $3/ga) to commute, an hour one-way.

I guess I need to weigh the pros and cons...

Is the most recent route the most affordable? I feel like when I started looking, I saw some for $3.50.

Perhaps you should get an Orca card. I believe they're still doing the 2hr transfers on the cards, but someone else probably has a more current knowledge and can explain how that works.

The prices I listed are for ORCA card holders.

Hopefully some folks come back to help me clear this up...

King County Trip Planner gives me this route:
Sounder from Tacoma Dome to Kent Station > P566 to The Landing. Total time of 62 minutes. Is this wishful thinking?

No price.

Also, the ORCA card monthly pass. How does that work? If I go over what I pay for the monthly pass, will it then be "free"? For instance, the $144 pass would amount to 36 $4 fares. What happens if I take more than 36 trips?
