My husband and I are trading in the Palouse for Western WA to move closer to family. We plan to move in about a year and we're taking a trip at the end of the month to scout out different cities on the west side to move to. I work in the medical field and my husband works in customer service, so we feel pretty confident that we could find a job in most cities. I was hoping you guys could give us some recommendations on what cities we should check out/cities that you love. We're looking for a place that's:

- within an hour or two of saltwater
- has good hiking
- has a nice downtown (doesn't have to be anything too crazy, just a few good coffee shops you can walk between)
- has good schools
- feels safe (relatively low homeless/violent crime)
- near a farmer's market
- potentially allows residents to keep a chicken coop for personal use
- has good shopping within an hour's drive

Our house budget is $350,000, and we're looking for a fixer-upper. We don't have any children yet, but we definitely want to be in an area that is family-friendly for when the time comes. Any suggestions/recommendations would be much appreciated! We're looking at anywhere from Bellevue to Bellingham, so feel free to throw out your favorites (even if it's more south or west than those cities).

Thanks in advance guys, I'm excited to hear your favorites!

North end of Tacoma may have what you're looking for. North of 6th avenue .Neighborhoods are 6th ave/UPS (where I live), N Slope Historic District, Stadium, Old Town, and Proctor. Still beautiful homes in your price range. These neighborhoods have top rated schools.
