Radio stations exist to serve the public, but beyond that they exist to make a profit. Revenue is based on not only ratings, but the ability to sell their airtime to advertisers. Smooth jazz stations have a hard time with this, so they don't exist much.

Here in Eastern WA, a station is providing not a smooth jazz format but an adult-alternative rock format. Funny, I like them a lot, but they don't have much advertising...some would say that is a good thing, but no...it is a bad thing. Don't predict they will continue much longer.

I don't know how radio can exist much longer regardless. The internets allow other options without ads or announcers, both of which I find too annoying to put up with, and the options are improving with time. (As for 98% of jazz...it can be ok live, but it's the worst form of music imo, other than maybe twangy country.)

Radio will continue, but only for the masses. Those who need to be selective will find their options elsewhere.

In FL smooth jazz is bigger. Way more channels down here for that. Personally I like alt/indie most or its one of my favorite genres.
