Does anyone know of a retail outlet for Swamp Coolers in the Puget Sound area? Even wholesale might help: maybe I could get a retail to order one for me.

Tada!
I found this by Googling swamp cooler seattle. They're in Auburn:
Air Conditioning Contractors - Seattle, Tacoma, Puyallup, Bellevue, Kent, Renton, DesMoines, Burien, Federal Way, Auburn (http://storefront.dexonline.com/universal-refrigeration - broken link)

This is a joke, right? Why would you want to be colder and have more humidity in the Seattle area? Those things are made for a desert environment.

Maybe they get hot. I'm just throwing that out there.

I'd rather have an AC. Swamp coolers might get moldy.

ron edge, you might find this article by Slate interesting....

We picked up a portable unit at Lowes a couple of years ago. Swamp Coolers work best when it is hot and dry, which isn't the typical situation here in Seattle. They work wonders east of the mountains, though.

They do work better than fans, but not as well as a window rattler AC unit.

I had a swamp cooler in N Texas, where it's dry as a bone. Most houses had them. I can't see having one in the PacNW. Aside from the fact that we only have maybe a handful of days inthe summer that would warrant the use of AC, they work best in dry areas. Mold is already an issue. Why compound it?

Default swamp cooler

Thanks all. Very helpful. I'm a complete, or nearly so...after all: I managed to find this place all on my own... a complete idiot about computer stuff. On-line, I only skim the surface. Poor 'puter. I can almost hear it screaming: "For GAWD"S sake, man.... USE ME!!!!
Thanks again.

Oh...PS: "Woof": I'm buying it early so when it's hot as hell in my apartment when I'm, as a nightshift worker, trying to sleep, I can put it next to my bed. No joke: it gets to over a hundred some days in July / August. RE

Just be aware that a real airconditioner works better if you can put one in your window, Ron. Swamp coolers put a lot of moisture into the air, which makes me very uncomfortable.
