This thread has been a huge font of information and I really appreciate the time people have taken to contribute.

We are considering moving to the Seattle area and I have seen over and over again that eastside is where to go for education. Our 12 year old son loves to play music: drums, bass guitar, trombone, and upright bass. Any thoughts on an area that has a strong music curriculum and/or private lessons?

Lots of places here that offer private lessons.

As for schools that offer music education, I've always heard that Bainbridge Island and Camas (which is a town closer to Portland, OR) have the best music programs.

That's good information. Do you know if they are good schools? Or what the commute to Seattle would be like?

We use Kaleidoscope School of Music in Issaquah and they have an extensive music program - even a heavy metal program that appears to be well attended. They were just one of many schools of music I checked out. My kids are in Issquah Schools and I think they have music 2x per week in elementary school.

Bainbridge Island SD is one of the top school districts in the state. Very hoity-toity area, and beautiful. A lot of people on B.I. commute to Seattle via the ferry system. Island life is not for everyone, but personally I would love to try it.

But we have many other non-school programs that you can check out... like the Suzuki Institute of Seattle, Music Center of the Northwest (Music Center of the Northwest), the Conservatory. Too many options to choose from. Personally, I loved Pacific Music of Redmond-- staff were just superb and fun to deal with!!
