437.5 mile a day average. That's one hell of a rider. bolillo, I bet in a flat tire he got another bike. I bet anyone doing this for a record would have no less than 6 identical bikes.

My 437.5 miles is based on the USA being 3,500 wide.

You beat me by 7 months, and I had a 1,600cc engine.

It's a old cowboy trick I was taught.

The trick is at 50 yards there is a marker. Both the runner and the mounted man must get to the marker and run back. A man will win every time so long as he is fit. A man can forget about it in a straight line 100 yards.

So far I never found a horse so foolish as to run that race with out a man.
OK Mac
At first I figured you were talking about a riderless horse, that would probably just follow you or ignore you, then you mentioned the mounted man making the turn at 50 yards........
now I want to know the trick???....
Now if you were talking 50 ft?????

The world record in sprinting (for a human) is 9.58 seconds for 100 meters (109 yards). That means a speed of about 10.44m/s or in imperial units, 23.35mi/h.

A horse gallops on average at 25-30mph. So, in a straight line to the barrel, the horse would beat you hands down at a 50yard distance (it would beat even the world champion sprinter). If there is a trick, it is in the physics of the turn, the horse has larger mass and hence, at higher speed it has more momentum. To waste the least amount of time rounding the barrel, the horse needs to start slowing down much earlier than the human. The human could possibly (theoretically) catch up at the point of the turn (but probably not beat the horse to the turn).

Also note that the fastest quarterhorse gallops a quarter of a mile at about 55mph. At that speed, he would not be able to turn the corner but at that speed he would beat the fastest human sprinter even if he had to walk through the turn

My $.02

Have you actually tried this manuever? Was it on a barrel racer or a pole bender or some other gymkana sport? I'm thinking any good Quarter horse could manage pretty well regardless of if it was a barrel racer or not.

that's why I want to know the trick, both our quarter horses will turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change, and beat any man to 50 yds by half the race

There is no trick. A lame horse could be beat by the world's fastest sprinter
