Having been told multiple times by coworkers and employees that when the zombie apocalypse happens, they want me along and carrying an Estwing hammer, I think I might actually carry one for certain social work if the world ever does become a more lively place. Of course at least two knives go along when camping or “surviving”, but there is always a framing hammer in the truck. When you have used a particular tool for thirty years, one could do worse for a close in weapon. I also favor the tomahawk. There, you can get a hammer AND a blade...

My candidate for "stealth" weapon / tool is the exhumer. Innocent nail puller... or tomahawk?

For backwoods use, a good sheath knife on my belt would be worth more to me than a hammer. A full-sized axe would be one of my next requests though.

I see that the OP was originally on about a post SHTF urban environment though. I would still go with the knife, an improvised hammer should be easy to come up with, well, easier than an improvised knife.

I must have 50 different hammers around the house and shop, they are good for what they do, but in the woods, you can make your own mallet out of a suitably sized small log, or use a rock.

For knives, I am referring to the gerber LMF, or the KABAR, or the Bear Grylls knife, something like that is really popular in the sporting goods stores. Which is actually more useful?

There is an old saying that answers this question nicely. " You can't use what you don't have. Life gets worse if you can't make it yourself. In every case you can make all you need as long as you carry a good stout knife to cut and shape with"

You can even make a hammer and ax with a stone and stick.
