Amazon customers in at least 10 states will begin paying sales taxes on their website purchases for the first time this winter. Tax collection begins Wednesday in Mississippi, Missouri, Rhode Island, South Dakota and Vermont. It already started this month in Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Utah, and begins in Wyoming on March 1.
Lame, I thought the "whole point" of shopping online was to avoid taxes??
Oh well, even wih the sales taxes Amazon still ends up being cheaper than real life stores.
Such a shame that there will be taxes now, but I guess it was only a matter of time until greedy states demanded a piece of the pie. Nothing good ever comes from taxes, most of the time the taxes are diverted to waste and corruption.
No, you are supposed to pay sales tax anything you buy online if you would also pay sales tax on that item if bought in a store.
Avoiding paying taxes is usually not recommended.
Yep.
Amazon is now COLLECTING sales tax in those locations. Consumers were always supposed to be paying it themselves when they filed their tax returns - the fact that a vendor didn't collect the tax didn't change that, just made it easier for people who wanted to ignore their legal obligation to report these purchases and pay the applicable sales tax.
And in reality, now that they are collecting the tax in CO, they are more open to doing business here and have opened a sorting center and are in the process of building a distribution center, creating about 1500 jobs between those 2 facilities and improving service for Amazon shoppers here in the Denver metro. Seems like a a good thing to me.
Really there is NO LAW saying taxs MUST BE PAID.... They have everyone FOOLED and buying into this VOLUNTARY THING like it was mandatory!! (No official law on the books)
