There was this couple I knew who would buy a new tv, put the old one in the box, return it...and then brag about it. Like t hey were some lifehack geniuses.

Eek. This is what gives "returns" a bad name.
I think it depends, if something is defective and needs to be exchanged, for instance. I got a Microwave that I found I did not like the operation of and took it back within the return period to Home Depot, to get a better model. I have returned clothing if it was ordered online, tried on at home and needed to go back to the store or otherwise, a gift that was just "not me".
Quick suggestion if you still have it. Donate the one you don't want to a local Boy or Girl Scout Troop. There are always families who can't afford gear for their kids and every troop tries to keep a few packs around for those kids to check out and use on a hike/backpacking trip.
I messaged them this morning. I like this idea the best. Hopefully they can use it. I don't mind taking the "loss" on it if it's going to a good cause. I donate time, emotion, and money to dogs all the time, but never really people for whatever reason. It'd be nice to try something new for a change!
That was a really good episode, and as a life-long LL Bean customer it makes me sad a little bit.
Costco had to adjust their return policy too because it was being abused. One glance at the return line at a Costco and it becomes clear. What a disgrace. I file it under "this is why we can't have nice things."
I worked with a woman who tells the following anecdote:

I worked at Nordstroms early in my career, selling very expensive fancy full-length evening gowns. One customer was notorious for buying a very expensive gown, wearing it once (say, a New Years Eve function), and returning it the following week. In one case, however, a photograph of this woman & her husband was on the front page of the newspaper's society section; she was of course wearing a gown she had just purchased a week before for the fancy benefit. The woman came back to the store with the dress, obviously intending to return the gown. I cut her off at the pass, so to speak, by having the front page of the society section of the newspaper there, showed it to her and heaped praise on her for how elegant she looked at the event wearing the gown & that she must be proud. I gave her the newspaper section to see. She swallowed hard twice, said thanks, and turned around & left without returning the gown after all.

Wow. That’s straight up fraud and theft. They’re making a dishonest representation of what’s in the box to the store and claiming equivalence with specific intent to deceive.
Where is it listed for sale? I like backpacks, and could always use a new purple one. (says the woman with 3 purple packs already...)
Ha.....I just promised it to a local Girl Scout troop. And the purple bag thing, is really why I decided on blue. I have 4 bags that are purple (not counting that one), two of which are hiking packs! Lol

Good on you! You've done the right thing, and you'll always feel good whenever you 1) use your pretty blue pack, 2) see a Girl Scout, 3) run into me on the trail with my other purple backpacks, knowing you saved me $100! (P.S. Don't forget to take the tax deduction for $130!)
