I have never done any shopping for St. Patrick's Day. If it occurs to me and corned beef is on sale I might make corned beef and cabbage but that's about it!

Sheppard's Pie. Tell me about it. Easter sales and no "St. Patricks Day".

In Ireland, it's a religious holiday. In the USA, it's an excuse to drink.

With it so close to Easter this year, you'll see many places just skip it. It's like Columbus Day....which I call a Mattress Holiday....no one celebrates anything, but every place that sells mattresses has major sales for some reason. I call Valentine's Day a Hallmark Holiday...why? You should treat the people you kindly every day not once a year with over priced junk.
Even last year where Easter was much later, St. Patrick's Day was largely ignored by most retailers at least here in Arizona.

LOL Every holiday is a "mattress holiday."

This is the opposite for me, I found out I am 45% Irish through my DNA test. I never knew that. I guess I’ll be celebrating this year and years to come.....LOL

Joanne's has an entire aisle devoted to St Patrick's Day. Our grocery store even has some stuff, bought my nephew a green cupcake.

It seems that St. Patrick's Day is suffering a similar fate with retailers as is Thanksgiving in recent years, where retailers head straight to Christmas after Halloween.

While I am not Irish, I think a little green doesn't hurt for that day. I usually wear a polo shirt in a color known as Absinthe Green for that day.
The Dollar Tree does a fair job of offering decorative items for just about every celebration. Currently, there are door decorations, beads, hats, ties, and other assorted items to warm the cockles of your Irish heart. Since the Dollar Tree carries them, the Big Box guys don't need to bother with taking up space for something that they only sell in limited amounts for a limited time.

BTW, is it true that absinthe makes the heart grow fonder?

I don't drink absinthe, although I do know that absinthe is known as the Green Fairy. Most of the time I wear a shade of pink known as Fairy Tale (with Valentine's Day and Easter the days that I ensure I wear that color), so I wonder if that makes me the Pink Fairy when I wear that color (not in the gay sense, but due to the fact that the color is known as Fairy Tale). Interesting that I have shirts in two different "Fairy" colors - Fairy Tale and Absinthe Green.

I think it's become kind of played out and predictable. The aura of green shiny foil shamrocks/cartoonish leprechauns washed down with bad green beer and functioning alcoholics being obnoxious doesn't seem all that appealing to most, kind of like how Cinco De Mayo has become as well.
