I am tracking a purchase I made from Bealls Florida that shipped via FedEx SmartPost, and today I got an "In Transit" scan that my package was in Lowgap, North Carolina. It seems quite strange and concerning that my package would be routed there. Has anyone seen something like this happen before? I am very worried my package will get lost. It seems odd that a package going from Florida to Arizona would be routed through North Carolina when it is an easy drive down I-10.

I actually wonder if it is heading up to the FedEx SmartPost facility in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

I don't know exactly how Fedex operates but I have been in the delivery business as owner. It's a bit of tight wire act because you need to balance time, shortest distance and a full truck. You don't make money driving all over the place but you don't make money driving around with a half empty truck either. In their case if the shortest distance is over/under capacity they will route it somewhere nearby that can accommodate the packages. e.g. A truck leaving Florida is full but there is one NC heading in that direction with room.

Update: my package went to the SmartPost facility in Groveport, Ohio. To my surprise, FedEx is now expecting a delivery date a day earlier. I wonder if FedEx Ground or Home Delivery will be delivering this package instead of USPS. FedEx in some areas is now assigning SmartPost packages to Ground or Home Delivery drivers if they have other deliveries scheduled in your area.

FedEx smartpost, isn't.

I get stuff sent by smartpost from Dallas to Austin. First it goes to Houston. Where it normally sits for 2-3 days. Literally. Only then is it handed over to the postal service. It can take 6-7 days, depending on weekends, for it to reach me.

I've had lots of stuff shipped from all over. The routes have never made sense to me. My pkg will arrive at a city a few hours from here then the next leg of the journey will take it to a city further away before it gets routed to where I actually live. It's crazy and I hardly ever see tracking that makes sense to me, but out of all the stuff I've had shipped I've only ever had one pkg go missing so I think your pkg will arrive ok.

I detest Smartpost. If I know a seller is sending an item Smartpost, I will choose another seller. It is the slowest method of shipment. I get items from overseas faster.
