My favorite aunt who passed away left me a Movado watch and I got it engraved. I got to wear it just a handful of times before the wristband broke. When I walked into a local Movado watch store, I've been told that the only way to get it repaired is to mail it to a certain address to get it fixed.

For a watch that's worth at least $500 or so, I'm wary about doing that, but I'd like to also wear and enjoy my watch too. I also went to a regular watch repair person and he didn't want to touch it...I'm sure due to it being so expensive, he didn't want to touch it with a 10 ft pole in case he makes it worse.

I guess I just mail it but pay extra to mail it certified, insure it, and make sure I have it where someone signs for it upon received on their end. Is that the only way to go?

A lot of better watch brands use a few service depots here in the US.

Mailing a watch in for service should be done like any other valuable mailing, insured and registered if not at least certified with signature etc. But it's not an unusual thing, and watches far more costly than your Movado are handled this way.

You can also find a Movado dealer who might handle the transaction for you. They will just send it to the same depot, but perhaps with more assurance.

Seems like an awful lot of trouble to replace or repair a broken band. I think you probably need to find an old-style jewelry store who can either fix it or send it to their own repair person.

It's not that simple. Many designer watches are fragile and valuable/expensive. A small-shop guy doesn't want to risk damaging the watch and getting socked with a replacement cost or settlement.

I have a Gucci watch - probably nothing too valuable; a relative had a hot weekend in Vegas and bought us a his-and-hers set, many years ago - but it's been in my drawer with a dead battery forever, because no watch repair place from Main Street to 5th Avenue will touch it. It has a case edge of fine gold lines inset with black enamel, and I take it that the slightest slip of a watch wrench would damage that delicate detailing.

These are the only authorized MGI service centers in CA. These three locations can perform all repairs direct from a customer. All other locations will mail it to NJ for repairs. As you can see, most sales locations are not authorized or capable of performing repairs or upgrades tot he product.

Thanks, I'm like an hour from one of them. Can I just call, make an appt to maybe take it in person & wait for it while I'm there? It doesn't hurt to call & ask. They'll either say yes or no.

I actually found a jeweler who fixes these watches, so I finally got it fixed when I got some jewelry! It's nice to wear my watch again.

Very cool to hear. Now you get to wear the watch again that your aunt gave you. Wear in the best of health. Those are some of the best watches.

I still have an old Mickey Mouse watch my parents gave me way back when. I'm never getting rid of it.

Thank you for your kind comments. I had it engraved too. I've loved Movado watches for as long as I can remember. Someday, I hope to get myself one of the BOLD styles.
