I just ordered an item on Amazon under $35 and it appears Amazon gave me Free Same-Day Delivery on this item (a cordless computer mouse). Considering so many items are delayed on Amazon due to the coronavirus pandemic, it looks like Amazon might temporarily be waiving minimum purchase requirements for free Same-Day Delivery for Prime members on the few qualifying items. Has anyone else noticed this?
I think it has more to do with finding work for a willing driver. Once they sold out their ready stock of cleaning items Amazon has slowed down like others in the community as people hunker down

I don’t think that’s true at all. I’ve been getting a lot of our food products such as rice, peanut butter etc. from Amazon and I think a lot of other people are too. People who live close to Whole Foods Market can get their entire shopping order delivered by Amazon. Also people still need the other things that they always bought on Amazon, for instance I just ordered air conditioner filters since it’s spring. I would imagine more people are using it so they don’t have to go into stores. Two weeks ago they announced they were going to hire 36,000 more people.
Also the driver would get the job whether it was a same-day delivery or a next day delivery.

Actually, many One-Day deliveries are handled by the Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) who drive the Amazon delivery vans, while Same-Day is pretty much exclusively by Amazon Flex drivers. The DSPs deliver the majority of One-Day Amazon Logistics deliveries that are sorted in the morning (Cycle 1) and about half of those that are sorted midday (Cycle 2).

My point was they aren’t doing it because their drivers are desperate to work. If they don’t use their drivers for same day that makes my point even more.

DSPs only deliver Amazon Logistics, while Flex does Logistics, Whole Foods, Fresh, and Prime Now. DSPs are businesses who are contracted to deliver for Amazon Logistics and operates a similar model to FedEx Ground.
Flex drivers, on the other hand, are individual contractors who drive their own personal vehicles. Note that not all DSP vans are in Amazon livery; some of them are unmarked white vans that are owned by the contracted business.
As for which Logistics deliveries go to DSPs vs. Flex, as stated, Flex gets pretty much all of the Same-Day, while for One-Day, DSPs get most of the Cycle 1 and about half of the Cycle 2. Typically, the One-Day deliveries that get assigned to Flex tend to be in areas with lower delivery density or to some out of the way address that it would not be cost-effective to send a DSP.
