Everyone makes mistakes- it's how we learn and we're just humans.

Yes, everyone does make mistakes. But you apparently feel as though the mistake was in getting caught. There are some things you shouldnt have to learn through mistakes and stealing is one of them. Your attitude makes it very clear that you havent learned a lesson at all.

Edited to correct spelling typo.

Well, as a legitimate answer, shoplifting under $400 is covered under California Penal Code - Section 484. This is considered Petty Theft, since the total items stolen is under the Grand Theft threshold.

California Penal Code 484 (Petty Theft) « Criminal Defense Attorney Blog!

Generally, for a first offense like this you'll be looking at a fine, court cost, community service hour requirement, probation period and perhaps the requirement to be employed. The main problem you face, I believe, is that any subsequent shoplifting offense, no matter how small, can be classified as a felony in California, and then you are likely facing jail time in addition to fines.

If she had pretended not to speak English and carried no identification they wouldn't even have charged her. She's young though, she'll learn from the pros...

I saw that, but I figured maybe she posted again (and changed the details) because she didnt get the answers/sympathy she wanted the first time around. For some reason I have a feeling that the basic story is true.

She got a ton of replies, info and even a little sympathy,
at some point the thread dies out, but thats never enough
to fill up a trolls tank, his tank will always register empty,
needing his next fix.

If you are a troll, I have no sympathy for your misguided ways of getting attention.
If you are a new thief, I still have no sympathy for you.
Being a troll or a thief, either one, will get you no where in life.

If "feeding the troll" irritates some so much, why do they read the updated posts in this thread?
