Can anyone give me a current opinion of SW Shreveport, specifically Bert Kouns near Dean Rd. My daughter and son-in-law just rented an apt in Springridge Apts. When we drove there, it seemed like I saw quite a bit of new businesses, girl scouts out selling cookies on the corner, etc. It seemed like it would be a decent area for them to live. She'll be attending LSUHSC and he'll be looking for a High School teaching job. After reading some of the older posts, I'd just like to hear some current thoughts.

I kinda laughed when I read some of these posts. The bert-kouns area of Shreveport is actually very nice, and is a part of this city that's absolutely booming. I absolutely died laughing when someone said the crime rate is worse than new orleans and BR... really? Shreveport/Bossier is a pretty nice place to live, as a whole, it's not as pretty of a city as Baton Rouge is but as far as New Orleans goes i would never live in new orleans. The only thing about shreveport is the police are absolutely tyrannical around here, lol, i guess its not so much of a bad thing if you want to raise kids here. Everyone hates north louisiana, you've just never been here. but i have to say.. natchitoches is a nice town, just a bit boring. monroe is a giant cesspool of crime and decay.

FWIW on air travel.... I do a lot on business travel and I can tell you that of the last 9 trips, I've only flown 2 times from SHV regional airport. Even with advanced booking and considering the time/costs associated with driving to DFW or Love Field (Southwest), GGG (Longview) or AEX (Alexandria)... I still save quite a bit of money. Long term parking at DFW is $8 a day and cheaper at the other mentioned airports.

The SHV Regional Airport Managment keeps saying the same thing...apparently thinking that if they keep repeating themselves enough...that people will accept what they say. But bottomline is: SHV landing / boarding fees are higher than other airports...the local "good ol' boys" running things charge what they want and make deals to suit them. The airport managment functions just like the La. State Fairgrounds in Shreveport....charging outrageous fees to whomever wants to use it. Until Bossier's CenturyTel Arena was built 10 years ago...you hardly had any big-name concerts in Shreveport because of the high fees & undertable deals that had to be paid by promoters & touring companies. I heard firsthand from industry insiders saying that they would pass Shreveport from Dallas to East Coast instead of hassling with a concert...just too expensive.

So the Hirsch Colesium sits empty most of the time whereas the CenturyTel arena has: Mudbugs Hockey, Arena Football, Pro Rodeo, concert tours, etc. About the only thing the Hirsch sees is the annual La. State Fair and the odd tractorpull or rodeo that couldn't book the CenturyTel.

But that's how things go in NW La. Still very much "good ol' boy" and "good ol' gal" in some cases. Not that other places don't have similar things... but here...well you'd have to be deaf, dumb, blind and stupid not to pick up on how things go. And as long as people live in their own circle...in their own community enclaves..gated or not... they chose to be blissfully ignorant.

I'd like to support local biz & infrastructure... but flying out of Shreveport almost doubles my plane ticket and I will keep voting with my wallet until things change. If ever.

I venture to say that you should choose your University based on your major, not where it is located. I live in SBC now, but I loved LSU-BR & wouldn't trade the experience for almost anything, and Natchitoches (sp??) is sooo very beautiful. Centenary has a sublime campus.

I moved to Shreveport last year, but grew up in New Orleans and Lafayette. I find Shreveport to be very similar to Baton Rouge, just with a little less Cajun influence and a little more Texan.

There are communities surrounding shreveport that are nice and some very nice area's of the city. Likewise, there is a great deal of poverty and poverty is ususally associated with crime. This is an agricultural and oil state so the people are often very country, and whether you like that or not is a matter of preference.
