Honeymoon in Shreveport (Alexandria, Natchitoches, Jefferson: city hall, good hotels, college)

I am getting married in March of next year and due to my fiance's new job we won't be able to go on a honeymoon. Does anyone know of a nice hotel or place to stay for a night in or around Shreveport. We would be willing to drive no more than 4 hours away from Shreveport.

I have searched online at the hotels in Shreveport but don't know if any of the big ones have nice suites or anything like that.

I would imagine fun could be had at some of the Casino Hotels in SBC. Also, the Paragon Casino is in Marksville, just southeast of Alexandria. That's a great place.

I'd hate to have to honeymoon in Shreveport, but if you must I would highly recommend the Horshoe casino hotel. I've stayed there and it's great with a fabulous view of downtown and the river. And you're close to everything.

If casinos and nightlife are not your thing, I would look into Natchitoches, there are some very fine Bed and Breakfast places along the river, and a decent amount of historical and touristy stuff to keep you from being too bored. The river is very beautiful and Natchitoches is only about an hour from Shreveport. It's the oldest town in Louisiana I believe.

I second redbean's suggestion of the Horseshoe Casino Hotel. It's very nice, and they have at least a couple of different types of special suites available.

There are also bed and breakfast accomodations in Shreveport esp. on Fairfield Ave, the Mansionous part of town. Try the Hilton Hotel in convention plaza for something different. There are several options open.

Or look at Jefferson, TX for romantic B&B's ...about an hour East of S'port just North from Marshall, TX.

Random thoughts////

I've spent some time in SBC. I like Best Western Motels. They are neither cheap nor outrageously expensive. I would want to take my wife on a wonderfully romantic get away. If you wait until after Thanksgiving when the Christmas lights are up, Shreveport dresses up. like a proper lady. The rose garden off Greenwood Road added a million lights. If you have a really mild fall and no frost the flowers will still be in bloom. Shreveport is a beautiful city - or at least what i saw of it was. Great mall that has a awesome music store. I bought a NOLA Xmas jazz CD. The book store is great too.

I might be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet Shreveport has upscale dining hidden somewhere.

When I left SBC I drove to the Gulf by of the highway that not finished. I stooped at the town where the movie Steel Magnolias was filmed. I can't spell it, but I can pronounce it Nak-eh-tose. It's a neat little town to visit. So is Francisville. The Catholic Church there pre-dates the Civil War and still has artifacts from that era. One of the employees gave me a tour. It was breath- taking. For someone who does not get excited about church, this was special. If my memory serves me I correctly I could have taken some tours of Antebellum mansions in that area, too.

All in all I thought the drive from Shreveport down to the Gulf was a romantic drive. I was not in a hurry and I was able to investigate a lot of intersting places and eat good food.

One of the best places I ate at in LA was at Gonzales - which is west of NOLA on the Interstate. The chinese buffet is outstanding. The city hall really lights up at Xmas. It's a fun place to visit and the folk are very nice.

I like Natchitoches. S'port has some decent restaurants and a few really good hotels: Shreveport - Bossier Convention & Tourist Bureau You'll need to sort through the hype & PR hooplah the local CVB tosses on their site but go to www.Tripadvisor.com and get some honest reviews.
