When analyzing a soccer match, what kinds of statistics do you use?
Like how on ESPN, the commentators always use some kind of stat to describe a football game, basketball, baseball, or hockey. They talk about time of possession, rushing yards, turnovers, offensive rebounds (second chances), plus/minus, Goals against, Assists.
I think if soccer had those kinds of stat, will be more popular in the states. The US loves sports with lots of measurables. That is how they gauge individual skill and progression.
Except for ball possession, shots on goal and maybe the amount of corners taken, I have to admit I never really pay much attention to statistics. But that's personal.
The football teams themselves keep tons of stats to analyze their players of course, but that's different.
Too many stats would 'bog the game down' far too much, its more a game of ebb and flow than statistics, though I think Sky are using more stats than you used to get, the only stat that really matters is how often you get the ball into the back of the net!

There's plenty of various statistics. Just read a game recap at soccernet.com: shots, shots on target, saves, possession percentage, fouls, yellow cards, red cards.
In Barca's last two losses they dominated time of possession, but they weren't doing anything with the ball. That one for sure can be misleading, but generally it is a pretty good stat. Maybe a combo stat of TOP and SOG would be a more valuable stat. Passes and completed passes may be valuable, or TOP by half of the field, eliminating the defenders passing back and forth to each other (even though there can be value to that).
You know, different stats work for different styles. If you are sitting back trying to absorb the offense and then counter, your TOP will be small. Thsi style can win with little TOP, a few shots, but limiting the other teams SOG.

I would look at different stats for teams like Barca, Swansea etc. Mainly possesion and the other teams shots at goal.
The only stat that matters is the score at the end of the day.
There are loads of stats in football. Some of the stuff they come out with is amazing. They cant tell you how many forward passes Xavi has made to a teammate and then add that to his all time stats. They can tell you how many touches of the ball Messi has had this season, how many nutmegs Suarez has made, the amount of passes made around every league in Europe and mad stuff like that.
They are there for you if you want them. There are some great pages on Twitter with all these stats.
I was looking at a stat the other day which said Luis Suarez has made something like twice as many completed dribbles then Gareth Bale and the most in the PL this season.
