In a struggle for power and money, FIFA decided not make it mandatory for clubs to release players called up by their national team to take part in the Olympic tournament. As a result many sides ended up having to fill their squads with second or third pick players. I understand FIFA wants to baby its own competition, the world cup, for obvious financial reasons but the competition quality will obviously suffer from it. With such weakened sides it's been pure bogus for quite a few editions now.
Of course it makes sense. Sport is part of the Olympics and clubs are protecting their contractually bound assets. The games will go one with more amateur players, just as it should be.
They should take football out of the Olympics, Its a waste of time.
I would've liked to have seen a British football team taking part in the Olympics (or future Olympics). But it seems that you, Chris Coleman and a few others disagree:
come to think of it, Swedish women's team wouldn't even be in the Olympics and wouldn't get to bunker up Americans if the Brits didn't pass them their spot (well, sort of).
People are still butt hurt the US lost ? It was solid tactics to beat a team that was better.
The Olympics in general are terrible, they have a dance competition and call it a sport. The Boxing is like WWE and all pre arranged victor's by the judges.
Football has enough corruption with FIFA and UEFA, they dont need another ridiculous tournament in the Olympics.

It simply has no prestige, a bit like the world club thingy, of course this might be because me and Chris Coleman are British and because we don't have a British Olympic football team it simply doesn't appear on the Olympic radar (a bit like basketball for example). I remember when Chelsea were in the world club thingy and I simply didn't even want them to take part, I didn't watch, didn't care about results, just wanted them home with no injuries whereas after the final the south American supporters of the club that won it (sorry can't remember who) went crazy like they had won the Champions League or something! Horses for courses I guess.
