The current red card system can completely ruin a game for the fans. I think a team should be able to substitute for the ejected player, just as they do in other sports. That will also make a red card more likely to be issued for badly behaving players, making it safer for the others.
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!
If a side can just replace a player after being sent off, then that pretty much defeats the point.
Red card punishment is supposed to be harsh. Without it, we've have a bunch of Joey Bartons out there running wild.

Yet, the same method of ejecting the player works fine in other sports (including the far more brutal sport of American Football). Hence, it does not defeat the point. If you want to add more compensation, give the other team an extra substitution.

American Football isnt a sport though, its a huge advertisement disguised as a sport. It totally defeats the point, you do wrong you go and your whole team is punished. How would an extra sub help ? That wont help any if you still have a crap bench like West Ham when Loverpool just bring in Sturridge for Salah lol

Fine, take basketball then. Or baseball. Or even ice hockey or rugby. The point is to reward the fans for watching and for paying money to enjoy the show. When you permanently remove one member of a team from the game without replacement, it completely changes the experience, usually in a negative way.
Anyway, yellow/red cards were only introduced in 1970. There's nothing sacred about the system and it could stand some improvement.
In Rugby if you get a red you're gone too and cannot be replaced.
