I know most of you don't care (don't bother reading or commenting). This is just for those of you who do care and appreciate women working hard to establish a soccer league for a sport they love and be role models to thousands of other young female soccer players.
After three years of hard work to put together a professional women's soccer league, the WPS debuted today in its opening match between the Los Angeles Sol and Washington Freedom at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA (L.A. area). 14,882 fans came out for the opening match and the Sol defeated the Freedom 2-0.
I hope this league survives and these women can continue to play their sport at the professional level and inspire thousands of young women as they have done at the World Cup and Olympics.
7 teams make up the WPS from the following cities/areas: Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, New York, Washington DC. In 2010 Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Dallas will add teams.
the womens game experienced such a great growth curve the past 20 years. club, ncaa and now professional. i am so proud of the women for their perserverance. my daughter now plays professionally in japan. but i love american womens soccer!!!! viva the womens pro game in usa!!!
A group of us went to St. Louis from Dallas for the MLS Superdraft this year. The WPS draft was the next day so we went to that too. The WPS draft was in a much smaller room at the convention center, but it was packed with people.
8 of us in Inferno, one of the FC Dallas supporter's groups, went up again for the St. Louis Athletica home opener against Chicago and we had a lot of fun tailgating and sitting with Laclede's Army. We even wore some custom-made Inferno shirts in green to support the Athletica.
I don't know about Dallas getting a team though. There's been an issue with them finding a venue to play. Pizza Hut Park was an option, but they couldn't agree to terms. Presumably, PHP was wanting too much money.
Our family is very excited with their season. While game attendance is light, the televised stuff is drawing a lot of soccer families like ours. And I noticed that when LA Sol and other top teams play, the stands (albeit small) are quite full, which is a good sign. My kids are fully behind St Louis since it has both Chalupny and Hope Solo...
