I live here in Indiana and I hate the freezing winters. We get quite a bit of snow and the high temperatures in winter (from Nov-Feb) can average at around 25-32 degrees.
I was wondering, what are the winters like in the southern areas of South Carolina?
My grandmother was from southern Indiana and she lived in the northwest Midlands of South Carolina for 50 years and was glad to be away from the snow every winter. Her section of SC can depend on a dusting of snow, if not three or four inches and up, but it is usually a once-per-winter event, even less than that in the southern part of the state. The answer is mild.
The fact is you would not be dealing with much of winter in much of the state but it can and has snowed in the entire state at some point but it doesn't last long. Bookmark a couple news stations in the state and follow our next winter...I think you will like what you see for the most part.
It averages from the mid-30's to mid-40's in the winter, I'd say--maybe a little warmer in the Charleston area (if you are talking about the southern part of the state I assume that's what you mean). It's not uncommon to have some days in the winter months that get to the low-50's. Snow occurs maybe a couple times a season here in the Upstate near the mountains, maybe less of that around Charleston. I'd say most days it starts off really cold in the morning but then warms up during the day--it's not uncommon to be going out to work at 7am in 34-degree weather and then by lunchtime it's in the low-50's.
Seriously you will find that a lot of your winter coats are obsolete. Sweaters and turtle necks will get the job done. Until it snowed this past winter I didn't even know where my gloves were stored.

summers are not significantly hotter, winters are not significantly colder
what is very different is the lengths of time involved. summer is much longer, winter is much shorter. Spring and Fall are very warm, but unpredictable, in the south.
One thing to keep in mind is that snow doesn't stay on the ground that long, for the most part. We received 2 snow storms this past winter. The first snow stuck for a few days, but the second one was basically gone the day after--and it was about 3 inches. I wanna say the temperatures hit the 50s that next afternoon. This winter was a bit chilly (I'm farther up north in NC, but I'm right on the border by York County) with many low temperatures in the teens and highs in the 30s, but it's the exception rather than the norm for a cold blast to come in and be that persistent.

I live in AIken county, Sc, which is really close to Augusta, GA.
The average winter day temps here is around 50. Sometimes you will get 68-70 in February.
The snow that we actually got last year started at 4pm during afternoon, lasted all night, (pretty), and by 12 noon the next day, it was gone. That was it. Hurry, take a pic!
Winter nights are around 35-40 degrese. SOmetimes it can get real cold at night in January and hit as low as 20. But the next day it is 50.
No heavy winter coats needed down here.
It's mild.
I been to the beach in January in 80 degree weather.
