So what MSA's in South Carolina will most likely have counties added to them?

I am not sure what the numbers are but, there has been a visible difference in the growth of Columbia since our family has been here. Downtown has seen a number of new highrise buildings, growth in The Vista along Gervais and Lady St has been impressive and the development Canalside looks great. So, I would not be surprised if our new metro exceeded 900k in the not too distant future. And, don't forget about Devine St and NE Columbia. NE Columbia seems to be only a county or two away from Charlotte, the area seems to be doing very well.

If Sumter ever got added to Columbia that would push it over 1,000,000 mark by 2020. Don't know if that'll happen though, but who knows.

Does Sumter have a say in the matter? If so, they would probably NOT want to be added into Columbia's Metro especially if it means they have to share any entitlement or block grant dollars that are emarked by the feds to areas based on their population...unless there is a chance that the those dollars would increase.. From a geo political perspective.. though Sumter residents identify very closely with residents from Columbia and there is constant commuter traffic between the two, TV and radio station advertising market and what not.... In the past I have noticed that the politicos from Sumter have nothing but contempt for their larger neighbor a form of big city small city politics. Sumter is Lord of the Flies in Sumter, Lee, and Clarendon Counties(Camden and Kershaw County have defected to Columbia/Richland in terms of their metro-political identity) where places like Bishopville, Mayesville, Pinewood, and Manning look up to Sumter and they like the attention.. Columbia on the other hand thinks Sumter is their Bama little cousin from the Country.....

April 2012
Columbia - 131,545
Charleston - 124,632
North Charleston - 101,356

Looks like N. Charleston has joined the 100k club in South Carolina.

April 2012

Charleston - 691,153 (+26,546)
Greenville - 653,876 (+16,890)

Myrtle Beach - 284,721 (+15,430)
Florence - 208,058 (+2,493)
Hilton Head - 197,043 (+10,033)

Hilton Head will over take Florence in the next 2 years. Myrtle Beach will as well. The coast is definitely growing.

South Carolina expected to reach 4,770,000 by Feb. 6, 2013

April 2012

Lexington County - 273,113 (+10,722)

It is estimated Columbia will reach 1,000,000 by August 18, 2029 with current growth.
It is estimated Charleston will reach 1,000,000 by April 18, 2030.
Greenville will reach 1,000,000 by November 11, 2043

With Greenville's burbs spilling into Spartanburg and Anderson counties, I wouldn't be surprised if they're one msa again before the estimated 1 million mark time.

Agreed. Didn't they have Spartanburg and Anderson included with the Greenville MSA at one time? Why did they nullify it? Any chance they add Spartanburg and/or Anderson to Greenville's MSA before the next census estimate in March?

Yes. I think the rules changed. Shouldn't be long before it meets that criteria imho. It has to do with commuting patterns.

Urban Centers in SC seem to be packing in the population while most of the rural areas seem to have stagnated or are declining. You would think that would be becoming more "pro urban" given the shift in population towards urban areas as opposed to what appears to be an "anti urban" philosophy in terms of the representatives in the General Assembly

Sumter and Columbia should have been working together long ago... only time will tell on whether or not the metros will grow towards one another and together... Technically Sumter and Columbia are only 12 miles apart... How??? the edge of Ft. Jackson to the edge of Shaw AFB (as the crow flies or in the case of Columbia.. the pigeon) Both bases are in the city limits of their respective cities.... But unfortunately there is a whole lot of nothing in between

redcliff- Think they could add the counties this coming March? I know for Columbia, Newberry is almost a given and possibly Sumter and/or Orangeburg.

Woodlands- What kind of growth would we ever seen from Sumter? From all the census figures Sumter is pretty much stagnated. Although I too, would love to see Columbia start to link up more with Sumter along 378.
