South Carolina is getting its fourth area code, 854. It will overlay with area code 843 serving the lowcountrt and Pee Dee regions. Ten-digit dialing will be mandatory by 2015.

Eastern SC going to 10-digit dialing next year (WSPA 7, CBS. Spartanburg, SC. 2014-02-12.)

I wonder why they can't keep using 843 for everybody. The article doesn't even try to obtain that information.

Area code 854 should have been a split solely for the Pee Dee region, inclusive of Florence and Myrtle Beach. Regardless of a split or overlay, the lowcountry of Charleston, Beaufort and Hilton Head Island will need an additional area code in several years.

SC's first overlap area code. Normal in big metro areas. Charleston/Myrtle/Hilton Head area outgrew 1 area code. 10,000,000 tourists flood it, creating lots of new business numbers maybe.

Since splitting from area code 803 in 1998, the areas served by area code 843 have seen the most growth through phone numbers used. As people desire to relocate to reside or to vacation in Hilton Head Island, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, more numbers will be used.

At some point, with additional growth, the Pee Dee region will be able to get its own area code through splitting from area codes 843 and 854.

Where do area codes 803 and 864 stand?

http://www.nanpa.com/pdf/NRUF/April_...rojections.pdf

Area code 803 is projected to exhaust its supply of phone numbers by 2017. I do not know how a split would work with most numbers being used in Columbia followed by York and Lancaster counties in the Charlotte area and Aiken in the Augusta area. Maybe area code 854 is a test to see if area code 803 gets an overlay.

Area code 864, surprisingly, is projected to exhaust its supply by 2025. I think the supply will be exhausted sooner.

I would've thought 864 would exhaust first, with so many people telling us that the I-85/Greenville region has as many people as New York City in it haha.

Apparently they look at different parameters as the Greenville MSA is the most populated. Who knows.

Default Ten-digit Dialing in Area Code 843/854 Overlay Permissible

Effective today, ten-digit dialing is permissible. Simply, both seven-digit and ten-digit (area code plus seven-digit phone number) dialing are allowed in area code 843 until 18 September 2015. On 19 September, ten-digit dialing becomes mandatory in the 843/854 overlay.

I also thought the same thing but I guess more businesses between Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Florence and the Beaufort/Hilton areas have boomed in the last 15 years. Like a post said earlier, I honestly didn't know why at least Florence/Myrtle Beach areas didn't get a separate area code in the beginning.
