My wife and are about 15 years from retirement and are starting to look for land to purchase. We currently live in the upper midwest and would like more moderate temperatures, a longer growing season and access to great bass fishing. We are looking for a few(+) acres of land at the base of the mountains of which we would build a small (1,000 - 1,500 SF) cabin in the next ten years or so. My wife would like to continue to raise chickens and tend to a decent sized vegetable garden. I love hiking and bass fishing. No need to be near a large city but not in the "middle of nowhere" either. Ideally, the land would be under $100,000 but could spend more for the right place. Please provide suggestions on locations.

I would probably post this in the Greenville forum. Greenville is at the foothills of the mountains. There are plenty of smaller communities in that area that sound like it would suit your needs. But I have no idea on the cost of land up there or how the bass fishing is. But there are plenty of lakes and rivers for fishing. Just not sure what's swimming in those waters.

jbear,
The lakes you want to look by are Lake Jocassee, (Greenville area), Lake Keowee, (Greenville area),
Lake Wylie, (Spartanburg area), and also, Lake Hartwell, (more towards Clemson), but also a good Bass
Lake.
You should look up online these lakes to see the area, and then visit and see what you like.
Good Luck.

Horry county. They have a lot great rivers. A lot of fishing of all types even salt water. You can get a nice home around 1,800 sq ft for around 120k to 160k.
