A couple of weeks ago my wife and I drove down to a couple of places in South Carolina, looking for a winter get-away. One of our stops was in Pendleton, a small town near Clemson. Anyway, around two hundred miles from the Bed and Breakfast we were heading to, and eight hundred from home, as I was exiting a gas station, my car’s brakes suddenly felt “funny.” The brake light was on and I didn’t know it at the time but the rear brake line of my wife’s eleven year old Jeep Grand Cherokee had just corroded through on us. Swell.
Got to Pendleton OK, asked the person at the B&B where to go for repairs. She told me to try Buddy’s Auto in town. Next morning I show up at Buddy’s a half hour before opening. While there I get into a friendly chat with a couple of locals, am introduced to the county sheriff, had a nice talk with him and we trade business cards (we’re in the same business – and turns out he shared a room when he went to the FBI’s National Academy with a NYC detective – a dept I put twenty years in).
Anyway, the garage opens and I explain my plight to the mechanic. He pulls my car right in, puts it on the lift and checks it out. Meanwhile I’m chewing the fat with the guys in the waiting room, got the “he’s a Yankee” ribbing (all in good fun), until the mechanic came out and explained what he had to do. I was driven back to the B&B, then later on in the day (they needed a part from Jeep), picked me up again.
Charge was most reasonable ($225 to replace the brake line, etc.), the guys went out of their way to be of help and I guess all I want to say is, if you’re ever around Pendleton SC, and need your car worked on, go see the folks at Buddy’s on North Main Street.
