Is this the 21st century, or am I in a time warp? Is this poor planning, or what? Not only was it a nightmare, but there was zero information about what was going on. We saw NO police directing traffic and, despite phone and GPS resources, no info about detours.
Once we got home, after wondering if we would need to pee in bottles and eat dog food, we looked online for the reason for the delay.
In future, it would be nice to have a detour WAY in advance of a 4 hour backup.

I just came through there. I-95 Southbound is shut down at Ridgeland, SC. Traffic is backed up for miles. I was lucky enough to be traveling North.
You were lucky. The jam started when we were 40 minutes from home, and it took 4 1/2 hours. Thank goodness we didn't run out of gas on the back roads we were routed to. Horrible.
I95 sb was finally opened around 1amEST Monday morning. Northbound was opened several hours prior to that. That area (around Ridgeland, SC) received radar estimated 8-10 inches in just a few hours time just before sunrise Sunday morning according to the National Weather Service resulting in a several mile stretch being shut down until waters receded nearly 20 hours later.
Flooding (coastal and inland) is the number one killer in the US from tropical systems resulting an average of 75% of all fatalities.
And yes i95 runs low through large swamp areas and is subseptible to flooding in 'unusually' heavy rain events (ie: Tropical systems and that October 2015 flooding event). In the October 2015 floods i95 was completely closed between Florence, SC to where i26 and i95 meet SE of Columbia. Huge stretch.

That's why it's important to check the weather before getting out on the road. A tropical depression coming through has been in the news for 3 or 4 days now. I-95 being shut down in Jasper County was all over the news yesterday.
For everyone here with a smartphone, i highly recommend you download waze app. Also "511 South Carolina Traffic" app has real-time data from the SCDOT.
