Gaffney City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would allow on- and off-premises alcohol sales on Sundays. An approval at the second reading would send the ordinance for vote in the general election on Tuesday, 8 November.
It's absurd that laws would differ from day to day and businesses have to get special permits for Sunday sales of any sort. What is this; 1621 and the Mayflower landing?
The permit is just a way for the local govs to make a buck off of those who like to drink. I would imagine though, that stores on the outskirts of counties/cities that don't allow Sunday sales make up for the cost of the permit pretty easily.
I recall growing up, many stores were open regular hours on Sundays, even a car dealership or two, but you could never buy on Sunday in SC, at least legally. I can remember back in the early 70s going with Dad to the bootlegger Sundays afternoons for a 6pack.
