Gaffney City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would allow on- and off-premises alcohol sales on Sundays. An approval at the second reading would send the ordinance for vote in the general election on Tuesday, 8 November.

This should already be allowed state wide.

I wonder if a bill to allow Sunday alcohol sales on and off premises statewide has ever been introduced to the South Carolina General Assembly.

I think the bill simply allowed localities to make the choice.

I would hope a statewide measure would be more effective over localities.

It's absurd that laws would differ from day to day and businesses have to get special permits for Sunday sales of any sort. What is this; 1621 and the Mayflower landing?

The permit is just a way for the local govs to make a buck off of those who like to drink. I would imagine though, that stores on the outskirts of counties/cities that don't allow Sunday sales make up for the cost of the permit pretty easily.

I recall growing up, many stores were open regular hours on Sundays, even a car dealership or two, but you could never buy on Sunday in SC, at least legally. I can remember back in the early 70s going with Dad to the bootlegger Sundays afternoons for a 6pack.

We lived in Tigerville, so Hendersonville was a pretty quick hop on a thirsty Sunday afternoon.
