Hello everyone,

My wife and I are always seeking out future areas for retirement. We currently reside in GA near Atlanta, and it is just too congested here.

Can anyone recommend any towns or cities that have the following:

1. Nice downtown feel
2. Nice developments or neighborhoods
3. Area near a good # of colleges (seeking to teach in retirement)
4. Civilization and not rural but more of the suburbs

We loved Greenville for example. Their downtown is beautiful. But stray way from there, and there appears to be not much in the area of new housing and or nice updated neighborhoods. We also love Hilton Head and Charleston, as many folks do. But Charleston is way out of our price range and obviously a huge tourist destination. And Hilton Head, although lovely, is too close to the water. Trying to avoid flood areas from hurricanes.

Thank you.

Greenville lacks new residential construction?

Well, teaching at a university limits you to Columbia, Upstate area, Charleston. Smaller cities with smaller colleges include Florence, Greenwood, Sumter, Orangeburg, Conway.

I really think for what you are looking for Greenville/Spartanburg is your best bet. Not sure why you feel Greenville has limited new development. It’s growing. And with Clempson, Furman, Converse, Wofford as well as a few others nearby, it gives you more of what you’re looking for.

Default Greenville - growing?

Thank you for those suggestions. When we were in Greenville 2 years ago, we drove around the outskirts and just didn't see any nice neighborhoods. It was very nondescript and quite old. But if it is still growing, then there may be future opportunities, which would be nice because downtown Greenville as I said is really superb. Except to live downtown, it is $$$. Thank you for those other suggestions as well. I will explored them.

PAV85:

As you are seeking to teach at a college in retirement, I would look at Spartanburg. It has a good concentration of colleges and a university:

You didn't go far enough outside of Greenville. Newer neighborhoods are in the Simpsonville area. You can find some slightly older neighborhoods (late 80-90 and newer) on the Eastside. What is your price range, that will help.

ETA: I would recommend Summerville, however, traffic is horrendous there.

Mount Pleasant has some great character and is just across the bridge from Charleston which has several colleges.

Oh definitely then on the eastside or Simpsonville. Newer homes, unfortunately, seem to mean fewer trees; however, the eastside being slightly older has plenty of trees plus closer to downtown. Take a look on the eastside and Simpsonville next time you visit. Homes range from high 200's up to million dollar with some really nice ones in the mid 300's to 400.
