Conway, Beaufort, Summerville are some towns that come to mind. Moncks Corner might even be an option, hour to the Charleston beaches and right there on some great fishing at Lake Moultrie and Santee Cooper.

I LOVE Myrtle Beach! We have brought our kids there several times for vacation!
I have nothing against Myrtle Beach but one should always remember: vacationing and living in a place are two different things.
We rented an apartment for several months when we relocated and I am so glad we did. The city where we thought we wanted to live was not much fun on a daily basis. We then chose an area about 45 minutes away from there.

It’s worked out very well.
Myrtle Beach is a ghost town during the school year/winter.

I'm not sure how long ago you visited Myrtle Beach during the school year, but it is anything but a ghost town during that time. Yes there are fewer tourists during the winter months and some of the tourist places (water parks, breakfast restaurants) close after the season. The rest of the city and area are still going strong. Plenty of golfing, fishing, boating, good restaurants and everything that brings tourists to the area in the first place. The best thing is these events, places are less crowded and traffic is flowing during the off season.

Last year, we went in October, it was basically a ghost town. Far removed from the summer crowds.
