Just curious what others may think of this. I have my ideas, but would rather have from other folks first if you are interested.

That's the same case for all states. And in SC, the stats aren't exactly through the stratosphere without them either.

Trying to link poverty and obesity to states is silly. If person is poor or obese in SC, they would be poor or obese in the other 49 states.

You have to consider the poverty rate. South Carolina’s is high. The higher the percentage of people in poverty, the more people there are to drag the stats down. Poor people tend to live in food deserts and have easier access to fast food and convenience store food than to grocery stores, thus higher obesity rates and the problems that come with that. Also, poor people are less likely to have the information necessary to make healthy food choices without intervention. While there’s a lot of poverty in SC, those in the state who aren’t poor aren’t being stopped from having a high quality of life here. Now let’s consider the poverty rate in say Washington State or Massachusetts. With such a lower poverty rate, there aren’t nearly as many poor people per capita to pull the stats down as much.

Does that survey or study factor in the extremely low cost of living here that in part fuels the growth SC is seeing right now? I'm very skeptical of these studies that always have most every state in the South at or near the bottom of their list.

Again, it’s the poverty rate.
