We are a family of 4 in our late 30's. Our children are 7 and 17 months. We have been thinking about relocating to SC, NC and GA. We are not very familiar with SC.

We are former New Yorkers & current Floridian residents. Are there certain areas we should stay clear of? What areas are best to raise our family in?

Thanks,
mom2

I have been researching the move for a year now and would say the safest bet in the Triangle area. We are coast people however and are deciding between Summerville,Goose Creek,Moncks Corner, and Conway in SC or Castle Hayne,Hampstead,Wilmington, and Leland in Nc. There seems to be more crime along the coast. Perhaps due to tourism and military bases? We are going back down in 2 weeks with the intention of buying land on which to build in one of those places.

My husband and I and our daughter have lived in GA for the past year in Cherokee county. It is one of the nicest places I have ever lived. The schools in Cherokee county are really good and it is literally the perfect place to raise a family. Where we lived (Canton) is really clean, low crime rates, good schools. We recently relocated to FL and we are missing the GA homes and environment. Since we came to FL, I think I have seen 50 homeless people. I never saw one after a year and a half in Canton.

You'd be better off sticking to the major metropolitan areas, since that's where the better schools in the state will be found: Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg, Rock Hill, etc.

I'm partial to the area I live in. We have a few good blue ribbon schools here. I am a native to SC and never experienced any type of "crime" near my home.

Good luck with your move!

USC GAL..Just wondering if you truly live in Socastee like your location suggests. If that is the case, I am wondering where in Socastee you have not experienced any crime???? Socastee is full of violence and government housing. I am not trying to be rude, just wondering is all.

Yes, I truly live in Socastee. As a matter of fact, right near Peachtree landing. We own land here that has been in the family for many generations. Ever heard of Mill Pond? My husband's family is the one that made the dirt road long before it became paved. No issues with crime what so ever. I'm not even fearful of going to Socastee to run errands. There are some parts that have become like a mini ghetto such as the apartments and mobile home parks. But for the most part, my area is nice.

We moved from NJ to Carolina Forest in Myrtle Beach, SC. There are tons of families and the school is good.
