I am looking to relocate to Pickens, SC or the Lyman, SC area. Like many other people I have looked at the crime statistics and cannot belive the numbers. I know it has been dicussed before but my wife and I are real hesitant about it now. Is the crime that bad or are the suburbs nice? I am a mechanic and was looking to rent for a few months and then buy a house around $150,000. Am I going to end up in one of the crime ridden areas or will I be able to find a decent neighborhood? Also, if someone could suggest any apartment complexes that would be good for a family of four with no children in school yet, that would be helpful. Also, I am visiting the area in a few weeks and need a hotel and rental car....is there anything decent near the Greenville/Spartanburg airport? Thanks.

There is a Holiday Inn Express on Pelham Rd (which is a few exits down from the airport exit). There are also hotels off the 385 that are close to the airport. Roper Mtn. Rd exit has Crowne Plaza, Comfort Inn and one other one by Marriott (I forget the name, it's in blue lettering). To get good rates, try Expedia or Hotels.com.

I live in Anderson county. I drive to Pickens county quite often. The city of Pickens isn't all that bad. You have some areas that aren't too safe, but you also have good areas that are very safe. The suburbs are very nice. Pickens is a growing county and there are new homes going up. It's in the 'country.' You are not in a big city by any means. You'd be able to find a good neighborhood there without any problem. Anderson county is also nice, esp around Easley where I live. We live in a great area and the people around here are real nice. I do not know much about Lyman, sorry. Good luck to you!

I was just down there house hunting last week. Use Priceline to book your room -- I got a suite (which would be large enough for 4) at Amerisuites in Greenville for $40+tax a night. It is about 10-15 min from the airport.

Pickens is fine, small town. Don't know about the rest. I did notice the crime stats seemed high in the area -- but I think it is just in the "bad" parts of town (ones that most people don't frequent and can stay out of)

$150k will get you in a nice family subdivison, 1/3 acre lot, 3br,2bath ranch home.
