South Carolinians forget that as far as our stupid state legislature is concerned, Columbia is only a meeting place. The vast majority of the legislators who make up the stupid legislature come from elsewhere in the state to meet in the middle (geographically speaking only). The residents of Columbia and the Columbia area can't help it because a bunch of idiots come in from the hinterlands every General Assembly session to do their damage or do nothing.

Isn't that the truth?

This report might help Columbia overcome its inferiority complex. It compares some economic statistics of South Carolina's MSAs and several southern US MSAs.

Charleston would give any city an inferiority complex . I being from California was absolutely blown away by the old world charm and overall beauty of Charleston SC . I had no idea that there was a city in the deep south that felt so European . The architecture of the mansions on the battery and the many historic buildings and lovely old churches so beautifully preserved and the many intimate gardens and back alley ways . Charleston is a gem that all Americans can be proud of and I am one of them .

Charleston is definitely a unique and cool city, and a fun place to visit, but when talking about great places to live I don't think Greenville or Columbia have any reason to feel inferior. I've lived in Greenville and Charleston, and Greenville blows Charleston out of the water in terms of quality of life, cleanliness, business opportunities, etc. I realize everyone is different, however.

To be honest, I didn't really love Columbia when I was a student at USC. I couldn't wait to leave. But in terms of what I like, I wouldn't live anywhere else if I was to live in SC (besides Rock Hill because it's closest to my family). Columbia's a pretty good size--small enough to see people you recognize/know in most corners, but big enough for a little variety.

As a Colanut (columbia native who likes columbia) I think a part of the problem for Columbia is that it seems that people move to Columbia for various reasons and bring their culture and expectations with them and there is no 'established culture' to speak of per se.. not that thats a bad thing.. It does make it a melting pot of diverse opinions and expectations. Contrast that with say a Charleston.. where everybody that moves there wants to be a part of the "Charleston Culture" or the old south charm, near the water, military, etc etc. or Greenville where the technology and manufacturing base has created an environment full of engineers and techies not to mention being on the direct pipeline from Charlotte to ATL causes some cross pollentation of those cultures. Unlike Charleston, most people that move to Columbia may do so because of a job relocation, relatives in the area, military, low cost of living etc

Columbia doesnt seem to have a real established culture other than being a college town and the capitol... so people come in with competing ideas interest expectation and bring in their own culture from where ever and then often complain if its not being satisfied. There is no dominant culture or prevailing culture in the City.. so you have a handful of diverse cultures which in and of itself seem makes the city unique. Residents often dont seem to appreciate that as an appealing asset and thus always compare the city to someplace else or to the community that they moved from.. and thus these positive attributes are often not celebrated
