Fried chicken and home made biscuits! Mac & cheese.

I was invited to a friend's house for Thanksgiving dinner and was surprised to find macaroni and cheese on the table and hardly any vegetables. It was delicious and I was happy that my wife brought along some mashed potatoes and gravy!

WHEW - this all sounds great.

Being we are just moving to Charleston next week where can I get a bowl of shrimp and grits for the wife? Also what is "she crab soup"? I am allergic to shellfish, so have to stick with the pinto beans, corn bread, turnip greens, cabbage, etc.

She crab soup is a really rich bisque/chowder, with crabmeat and sherry in it. The best I've had is at 82 Queen, but most restaurants in town should have it on the menu.

Same with shrimp and grits - it's just a roux with shrimp, peppers, onions, etc., served atop grits, and you can get it just about anywhere. Like someone mentioned, the Hominy Grill on Rutledge has a great brunch menu. Slightly North of Broad (SNOB), and Magnolia's are both great, and expensive. I've never been to Rue de Jean, but I hear really good things.

There is little difference in the food of New Orleans and of Charleston. Both cities have influence from the French, English, Native Americans and Africans. Both cities have always had an abundance of local rice and seafood, both are port cities which historically had access to spices, etc. Louisiana food has just been much better marketed throughout the years.
