could someone please help me? My family and I are planning on moving to south carolina either the Columbia or Greenville area. I have found that South Carolina has state income tax, we currently live in Florida(Tampa), where there is no state income tax. How does the state determine the amount of tax you have to pay? We are tired of the rude people in the Tampa area and have 2 children ages 9 and 4. We are looking for a better place to raise our kids, does anyone have any recommendations? and as far as the job market my wife is a pharmacist, which area would best suit our needs. Thank You, Jon

Jon,
I would look more to the east than the bigger cities.
Myrtle beach/Conway area is perfect for kids.
I have none, but I just moved here from Florida myself, and am LOVING it.
I live in Conway, which is 25 west of Myrtle Beach. It is a lovely town, and there must be at least 10 or more new developments going up here. It has a great college.. Carolina Coastal University, Horry Georgetown Tech..
I work in Myrtle Beach and live in Conway. I love it here.
If you want more info try this ink.

Also, the city of Conway has a website. It is a small town with great people, but yet a busy little town. It has everything to offer without being in a big city.
You may also email me for more info. I just moved here and am not familiar with the state taxes, as I also am a Florida native who is not used to a state tax. I know that when I registered my 2002 blazer, it only cost $129 for the personal tax and about 90 to register it for 2 years. Unlike Fla, which I think charges you about 300 bucks to register a vehicle if you are new in the state.
I wouldnt worry about the taxes at all.
This is a cool state. The only downside that I found is that there isnt a good PBS radio station that plays classical music all the time, and No sonnys BBQ..
(I do love their ribs).
Lots of country folk, who are just down to earth and as nice as can be.
Make the move, just stay out of the big cities.
Check out the beach area's.

Post state tax

You can check out the state tax at the SCDOR but it is based on your federal taxable income. You also get a tax credit for a married working couple, child care and a few other things.
The state tax is a percentage and the SCDOR will give the amounts. All in all it is not a bad state tax as far as state taxes go, for those states with a tax.
Where to settle is a different matter, one it should be based on work and schools. Right now Lexington County is booming and the schools are fantastic. Aiken County is in the middle of a growth cycle with colleges, good schools and a good job market.
Welcome to a great state!

thank you for the information. We are looking forward to visiting in the next week or so. We'll probably make a move around end of September.

Wow! that's interesting? Many of the posts here on the forum have suggested to steer clear of the NC area? I've heard nothing but bad things about the NC area? Interesting.

SC income taxes average about 5 or 6% of income. Assuming you're making decent money.

That's real good. Here in Northern California it's 9%! So, good for SC!
