I feel your frustration. That was my dilemma as well. I made sure to specify in my applications and letters that I was looking to relocate ASAP. I don't know if that really helped, but I'm sure it didn't hurt.

The other thing is to be realistic about your expectations, and figure out what you could actually live on. Salaries here are low. I am back to making what I made about a year out of college. It's a bummer, but for me the positives outweigh the negatives. I love living here.

Good for you! So, what are the positives? I would imagine the natural beauty of the area, the slower pace of life, no traffic and friendly people?? I have not been to SD yet but I have seen much of the rest of the country. I’m curious, Why do you “love living there?” I know SD is not for everyone; Primarily due to the long winters. I do however think my family would adapt quite well. I love the small town feel and we all like the snow. It’s all about making a living there. It seems there are jobs for those who want to work and yes, we know the wages pretty much suck. We are not into keeping up with the Joneses but don’t want to be poor either. Ill keep looking for work there and hope for a job offer. Thank you all for the feedback.

There should be a large flashing caveat that states that "low unemployment doesn't mean we have a surplus of jobs at the waiting."

I love the natural beauty and the small town feel. If you are an outdoor person there are so many things to do here. Almost everyone I've met has been pretty friendly. I needed a change in life and this was a good one!

So what’s your point? I left CA. with its 23 Billion dollar deficit and a job market that was in the toilet.

I realize there is no land of milk and honey to run to. I’m not delusional, just looking for a better life.

We are not handing out jobs left and right.

Who said there were jobs being handed out left and right?

SD has an unemployment rate that is half the national average. Now, does that mean I’m going to roll into town , grab a nice cushy desk job, put my feet up and light up a big fat cigar ? Probably not. What it tells me is that I have a better chance of finding work there than let’s say Michigan.

That is a logical fallacy. It means no one has laid off anyone it doesn't mean anyone is hiring. Don't assume there copious amount of jobs or probability of jobs or a shortage of workers based solely on low unemployment.

In addition to the unemployment rate we have what is called an economic forecast.A Job Creation Index is created by interviewing companies to see if they plan to hire or lay off in the near future.
SD ranks among the top three states in the nation.

The states with higher unemployment numbers means there are more people applying for a specific job opening. In other words, you have more competition and less of a chance to get hired. Some states are better than others for job seekers. That is not a logical fallacy. It's a fact of life.

All well and good. Without a job that is an expensive speculation that might be more costly than you think.
