As a brand-new transplant to the Rapid City area, I hope the spike is not indicative of a trend... but am still pleasantly surprised by the overall low crime rate. I can go out and take a walk without jumping out of my skin every time someone walks up behind me, and when I come home nothing is missing from my apartment. I admit to being floored that convenience store robberies are infrequent enough to warrant news coverage.

Still, if you're used to being able to leave your front door unlocked, any uptick in crime makes you feel less safe.

It sounds like you are enjoying your new location. It is nice in the Hills, isn't it? Hopefully it isn't a new trend. With the winter right around the corner, crime normally comes almost to a standstill. Not always, of course, BUT the interstate and tourism are partially responsible for our spikes in crime.

That is very true Jammie. Rapid City's stretch of interstate stops more drug trafficking than any other stretch of I-90. It is due to people transporting drugs from Seattle to Rapid City, SF, Minneapolis, and Chicago.

I have a friend who goes to school in Portland, OR. He says that everytime he drives home he gets pulled over in South Dakota, and it is usually for something minute like a blinker or 5 over. The cops here really watch west coast drivers!

Danny, you're SO right!!! I always think of those road signs they have where the trooper is standing there saying that you won't get across So. Dak. with drugs. According to the newspaper, there are a LOT of them who really don't make it across here. We do have good law enforcement here.
